Foundations of Clinical Supervision

CE Hours 1 1 Supervision

About this course

Effective clinical supervision requires more than clinical expertise. It requires supervisors to intentionally balance teaching, consultation, evaluation, professional development, and gatekeeping responsibilities. This session introduces the foundational theories, models, and practices that guide effective clinical supervision. Participants will explore established approaches to supervision, including Bernard’s Discrimination Model and developmental models of supervision, with attention to adapting supervisory strategies to the individual needs and developmental level of the supervisee. The session will also address informed consent, supervisory liability, formative and summative evaluation, corrective feedback, and practical techniques for observing and strengthening clinical skills. Through an applied approach, participants will develop a stronger foundation for creating supervisory relationships that support supervisee growth, encourage professional accountability, and promote competent and ethical clinical practice.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the core theoretical models of clinical supervision — developmental, discrimination, and integrative — and their application to counselor development.
  • Identify the ethical and legal responsibilities of the clinical supervisor, including duty to warn/protect, informed consent, and vicarious liability
  • Differentiate between the supervisory functions of teaching, counseling, and consulting, and apply strategies for each within a supervision session.
  • Apply best-practice techniques for delivering corrective feedback that supports the supervisory relationship and reduces defensiveness.
  • Evaluate supervisee developmental stages and select interventions matched to a supervisee's current level of competence and autonomy

Target Audience

Mental health professionals providing clinical supervision.
